Stihl chain saws have been around for decades. Stihl’s model 028 Wood Boss chain saw, called 028 WB for short, was manufactured in Germany and the United States primarily in the late 1970s through the 1980s. When you need to order replacement parts for your saw, knowing your saw's year of manufacture is helpful. Some chain saw makers embed the year of manufacture in the saw’s serial code; however, Stihl is not one of them. To find out what year your model 028 WB was manufactured there are a couple of things you can try.
Owner's Manual
Each Stihl 028 WB comes with an owner’s manual. All manuals have a copyright date on one of the first three pages or on the last page. Each year, the manual sold with a new saw is updated to incorporate any changes. This new information is protected by updating the copyright date. Look for this date in your Stihl manual. It is stated as the word “copyright” or the copyright symbol of a “c” with a circle around it followed by the year. For the 1985 manual, the copyright is found on the cover and on the bottom of page 1. If the manual is the one that came with your chain saw, the copyright year should be the year your saw was manufactured.
Serial Number
If you don’t have the original manual that came with the saw, the manufacturer or a local dealer can use your saw’s serial number to look up the date of manufacture in a database. The serial number is on the front of the saw’s housing near the bumper spike. Contact Stihl, or your local dealer, with this number.
Finding Parts
Because the 028 WB hasn’t been manufactured in recent years, finding parts can be difficult. If your local dealer can’t find the part you are looking for, call Stihl directly. The company may have the part in inventory left over from production. If not, Stihl maintains a list of dealers that carry parts that are no longer manufactured.
Replacement Parts
The 028 WB chain saw’s bar, chain and sprocket need to be replaced periodically due to wear. Stihl recommends replacing the bar with a reduced-kickback, green-label bar 16, 18 or 20 inches in length. The recommended chain replacement is the low-kickback, green-label 0.325-inch Topic-Micro 1 (26TM 1) or 3/8-inch Rapid-Micro 2 (33 RM 2, or 36 RM 2). When replacing the chain sprocket, use a seven-tooth sprocket with a chain that has 0.325 pitch and an eight-tooth sprocket with a chain that has 3/8-inch pitch.
